Is It Better to Be a Goddess or a Human (spoilers)?

What do you make of Circe’s choice at the end of the book?

Choosing mortality does help bring an end to the story. We know — because it is our own lot — how her life might go from there. And maybe it helps her relationship with Telemachus, although he doesn’t seem to mind her being a goddess.

But does it feel like a cop out?

Immortality is both a gift and a challenge. It’s nice to be immortal, but something more is asked of those who have received that gift.

And while it is painful for a goddess to love mortals and let them go, there must be wisdom to be gained as well. Is it possible to sustain and even grow the levels of sensitivity Circe achieved by the end of the book? Would it have been possible for her to find new challenges, even in a life that has no end? Circe had created a unique role for herself as a sensitive goddess. Who knows where that might have led?

We can only guess. But if it were the other way around — if you had a chance to become a goddess — what would your choice be?
